The release in January 2021 of a new re-creation of the first Grand Seiko from 1960 opens a year of celebration of the 140th anniversary of the company's foundation. This commemorative timepiece offers a remarkable blend of slimness, efficiency and precision. The case is just 10.9mm in depth, the power reserve is 72 hours and the accuracy rate is +5 to -3 seconds per day, all made possible by the hand-winding Caliber 9S64 which powers the watch.

Masterpiece Collection Kintaro Hattori 160th Anniversary Limited Edition The case and indexes are in 18k gold and the anniversary is marked by the trademark "S" engraved on a gold plate set into the movement's bridge. Kintaro Hattori registered this mark in 1900 as the symbol of the Seikosha factory.

The classic case design, influenced by the first Grand Seiko of 1960, offers a charming manual-wind dress watch with thoughtful proportions, an impressive movement, a simplistic dial with no date, and distortion-free finishing. Housed inside the comfortable-sized 37.3mm stainless steel case is the 9S64 mechanical manual-wind movement.

This expertly constructed and beautifully finished time-only movement can be appreciated via the watches’ exhibition caseback. With a power reserve of 72 hours and an accuracy of -3 to +5 seconds per day (static), the 9S64 showcases Grand Seiko’s expertise in creating highly efficient and accurate movements.

The dial showcases a form of Japanese craftsmanship, Urushi lacquer. The dial is made from long lasting Urushi that comes from trees grown in and around the town of Joboji that lies under Mt. Iwate, the mountain that dominates the skyline above the Shizukuishi Watch Studio. The black dial uses the lacquer mixed with iron to give it its distinctive deep jet black color.

High-legibility index decorated with a raised maki-e technique by the master of Kaga Maki-e Urushi, Isshu Tamura. The combined grace of the brush strokes of the Arabic numerals and the tension expressed by the markers emphasize the beauty and grace of the dial even more.
Only Joboji lacquer from Iwate Prefecture, the birthplace of the 9S Mechanical movements, is used. Domestic lacquer accounts for only a very small percentage of the lacquer used in Japan. Its handling is very difficult compared to foreign varieties, but it brings out deep black colors.

The natural beauty of Shizukuishi inspires a second manual-winding creation, also with an engraved dial.

"The 60th year of Grand Seiko, the natural beauty of Shizukuishi, the home of Grand Seiko’s mechanical watches, is celebrated in a new 18k rose gold cased watche. Powered by the manualwinding Caliber 9S64, this creation marks a new departure for the Elegance Collection and is a powerful symbol of the vitality that the start of Grand Seiko’s new 60 year cycle represents.

This Shizukuishi-inspired watch features 9S64 manual-winding caliber but the case is in 18k rose gold and the dial has an intricate yet sharp pattern that only very precise machine engraving can achieve.

The dial pattern takes the imagination to the forest of silver birch trees near the studio where the watch is made. As the viewing angle changes, the dial shimmers in green and white, just as do the trees when summer sunlight catches the leaves and the white bark of their trunks and dapples the forest floor. The soft, natural feel of the watch is completed by the slim profile of the case and the curved dial whose contours are followed exactly by the hands that are shaped by hand."
